Newsletter  - 2015

The MSCCS annual AGM was on July 4th, 2015, it was held at the Park picnic site and was well attended.  Penny Millway after many years as Chairperson had decided beforehand to step down. She named director Roy Tomlinson to sit as interim Chair.  As Rena Wheately had resigned as Treasurer in May, Mauno Tuomi became our new Treasurer with Director Debra Pituskin as his unofficial backup.  As no further Directors were nominated and the former Directors held their positions the meeting adjourned.

Within the community meetings to amalgamate the two fire departments were underway with Tom Nash president of SLDVFFA and deputy chief Ted Weight of  DLDFD negotiating an amalgamation of the two Fire Departments with an expanded operations area. They succeeded and the SLDVFFA would have its last meeting on Dec 15, 2015 where it voted itself out of business with the building going to the CRD and the meeting room, with CRD approval, awarded to the management of an MSCCS committee. The citizens of the Sulphurous Lake Fire Area now benefit from a newly organized and recognized Fire Fighting Unit while their former meeting room remains for the use of the entire four lakes communities under the guidance/management of a recognized charitable society.

The scepticism surrounding these events given the many months of hard work it took to achieve them took its toll on the citizens of the area but given the positive results most would agree it was well with it. The Christmas season was well spent in celebration by one and all.

Have a happy and peaceful New Year.

Newsletter - 2014

This is a crucial year for the Society we call the Mountain Spruce Community Centre Society. We the present Directors are attempting the near impossible both money wise and in gaining the crucial support  necessary to build a meeting place where all Four Communities of Hathaway, Sulphurous, Deka and Higgins Lakes and area can come together to solve problems or to just socialize. We have only to look back 75 years or less to realize what has been accomplished in the general area by cooperation. Our task by comparison is much easier given the communication tools at our disposal, but still cooperation is the key to success. Each of us as individual members of MSCCS must do as much as possible to keep this spirit alive.

In the next few months we hope to more than double our Membership and support for a Community Centre rather than continuing to use the meeting rooms of the two local fire halls.

A number of our Directors have held their elected positions much longer than our By Laws suggest and now deservedly, wish to be replaced by younger blood with fresh ideas in order to bring the long range plans closer to fruition.

The Park and it’s continuing development is an integral part of the whole project. Those Directors stepping down have indicated their support and desire to continue volunteer work in the Park. The Society is quite fortunate in having gained Mauno Tuomi as a Director and our first Park Forest Manager. He is a retired professional Forester and takes the sustainable part of his experience quite seriously. The beautiful extended fall of 2014 that we all enjoyed followed by a winter with little snow and temps just right for work with a chain saw gave Mauno and family with help from a few volunteers a chance to clear much of the dead and dying trees in and around the viewpoint trail and when snow did arrive to burn the heaps of brush and branches. Here we have an entire family working on a Community Trust which Mauno confides needs a lot more help if they are to make a dent in the amount of downed trees in and around the perimeter trail in the north east corner alone.  Volunteers are always most welcome to join in. Check the work party schedules or phone Mauno if you wish to help out.

A big drawing card for the Park this winter was the X country ski trails designed and set by MSCCS member Heikki Tuomi who is an avid ski-skater, a much faster version of the traditional sport. The gentle rises, long runs and sharp turns of his trails throughout the tall spruce groves of the Park are ideal for those seeking a good workout; while traditional grooved trails are faithfully groomed for use by those who are a little older and much, much, slower at the sport; but perhaps they gain a bit by just enjoying the scenery and fresh air.

A Community is only as happy and welcoming as it’s people and the amenities it has to offer. We urge everyone living here or who enjoy the area as a summertime visitor, to look beyond themselves and think about making a list of what they would like this beautiful area to become. We think you will agree that a central Community Park is really high on your list, along with a Community Centre in the not-too-distant future. To realize this and your own potential become a member now and a Director whenever possible.
